Skin Care Routine: What Is the Correct Order & Why It Matters?

The sequence in which you apply your skincare products is as important as the products themselves. Not only does the order matter, but you need to make sure that all of your products are compatible with one another. If a product doesn’t mix well, you can potentially cause damage to your skin.

Why is skincare routine in order important?

Failing to follow the correct order could result in clogged pores, breakouts, and an unhealthy complexion. In addition, if you are using a product that is not compatible with your skin, you can cause damage that may lead to inflammation and irritation. For example, if you apply an acid exfoliator to skin that has not been adequately cleaned, the pores could get clogged, or bacteria may get trapped.

These products can make your skin more vulnerable to sun damage and other consequences. Another example is when you neglect to apply sunscreen before going out in the sun; this could lead to a damaged complexion and other complications from sun exposure. Finally, you may have used products in the wrong order if you have noticed irritation, rashes, dryness, or other negative symptoms.

The correct order for a skincare routine:

The order in which you use your skincare products at home does not necessarily apply to the order in which they are used in a salon; however, this is in general guidelines. You can use these rules to create your routine at home and can be used in a salon.

Here are skincare routine steps:

  1. Cleanse:

Start cleansing your skin with a gentle face wash. If you are using a foaming cleanser or gel, make sure you apply it to your skin with dry hands or a soft brush applicator. Then, add water and massage the cleanser into your skin. Be careful not to scrub too harshly; this could cause damage to your skin and result in irritation.

  1. Serum:

When you are not using an exfoliating serum, a light & quick-absorbing serum with an active ingredient of your skin’s need. Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin C, Niacinamide & Retinol serums are healthy choices for all skin types. Serums are typically thinner than moisturizers and contain concentrated ingredients to target a specific concern, that’s why should be applied before moisturizer or sunscreen.

  1. Moisturizer:

After applying the serum, moisturize with a lightweight cream or lotion. Lotion should only be applied to the face; you don’t want it to get into your eyes or mouth. You can use an SPF moisturizer if you plan to be under the sun.

  1. Sunscreen:

Time and again, we have emphasized the importance of wearing sunscreen whether or not you are stepping out of your house. So again, you should choose a product with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or higher. It’s best if you have SPF infused in your moisturizer or your pressed powder.

  1. Night Cream:

Night creams are often thicker and more moisturizing than day creams. This is because they are designed to be applied to the face and neck before bed, so they can work their magic while you sleep. In addition, night creams are typically packed with antioxidants and other ingredients that can help improve the skin’s appearance. Most popular night skincare contains retinoids, which are derivatives of vitamin A that can help reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging.
