Why include face serums in your skincare routine?
Before stepping into the world of serums, my skincare routine used to be something like this:
1. Cleansing – Cleaning your face to remove dirt and grim with a face wash
2. Treating – Using serums to treat specific skin issues
3. Moisturizing – Hydrating the face with a good moisturizer or gel
But a lot of people still wonder, why do we need serums when you can have a pretty exciting product range in your kitty?
Here’s the answer:
Serums have become the most used product in the skincare industry because of their three essential properties:
1. Lightweight
2. Rich active ingredients
3. Effectiveness
But it should be clear that serums will not show results on day 1. As per the skincare experts, you need to give at least two weeks, and it may stretch to 6 weeks. Thus patience and consistency play a significant role here.
How many serums can you use at once?
What most people struggle with is how many serums can we use at once? Honestly, there is no fixed number to define the usage. Most skincare experts state using two or three serums at once.
Now, what would happen if you supposedly used more than three serums? In that case, there are great chances that it won’t reach the inner layer of your skin, which is the essential step for any serum to do its magic. Even worse, if you don’t know about mixing the suitable serums, it may lead to side effects like redness, irritation, dryness, etc.
But remember, this is all about using serums at once. Thus, you can use 2-3 serums twice a day, once in the morning and once at night).
Tip: Be careful when mixing different serums. A well-known beauty chemist and skincare expert, David Pollock, says, “Cocktailing may be a powerful solution, but I wouldn’t recommend mixing peels, retinol or acne-treatment products”.
What is the best way to layer serums?
Generally, the lightest-textured serums go first and then the thickest-textured serums. Besides that, you also need to consider your skin needs and your serum’s active ingredients.
How to choose face serum?
There are thousands of products out there in the market that present themselves as original, organic, natural, etc., but you need to ensure that the ones you are using are real. A brand and its product play a vital role; thus, don’t neglect it when shopping for face serum or, in general, any skincare product.
You can also consult your dermatologist to know about the right products that suit your skin needs.
If you have never used a serum, then I would like to recommend you two serums with whom you can start your journey:
Vitamin C Face Serum: It is lightweight, reduces UV ray damage, boosts natural brightness and evens out the skin tone. But, there are Vitamin C serums that may irritate your skin, so choose the ones only after a skin test on your wrist.
Fruit Based Face Serum: AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) & BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) are gentle fruit acids, best known to exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin on the surface. Many peels and scrubs also use AHA for the similar purpose but a face serum can work wonders with high concentrates in a few drops. These can be used once or twice a week for skin renewal.
You can also use other face serum as per your skin needs:
Tea Tree and Salicylic Acid Face Serum: Tea Tree extracts restrict the growth of acne-causing bacteria & 2% Salicylic Acid unclogs pores, combats blackheads & breakouts, and most importantly, control excessive oil production. Quite a blessing for acne-prone skin.
Hyaluronic Acid Face Serum: Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant that holds in moisture and keeps your skin hydrated for longer. This results in soft & plump skin with a natural glow. By keeping the skin supple, it also works on fine lines and wrinkles giving you a youthful glow.
Retinol Face Serum: Formulated as Anti-Aging Serum. Retinol is a type of vitamin A that helps boost collagen production in your skin that prevents early signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, dark circles, etc. It’s best to apply it at bed time when the skin undergoes regeneration, so the serum can work overnight to renew skin cells.
Niacinamide Face Serum: Niacinamide is a type of vitamin B that reduces melanin-transfer to skin cells that lightens pigmented skin and dark spots. It also maintains skin’s elasticity and strengthens the skin barrier function, keeping the skin soft & supple.
